Teaching Tolerance?

The Palenstinian Authority plays a double game concerning relations with Israel. Their diplomats and spokesmen talk of negotiations, peace processes and the desire for Palestinian statehood in the West Bank and Gaza. But the message to the Palestinian peoples is entirely different. In the Weekly Standard, Claudia Winkler writes about the weekly sermons sponsored by the PA:

....the Jews, characterized by "miserliness and cowardice," are the terrorists. "They deserve death, and we deserve life, because we are the people of Truth."

Sheikh Mudeiris, MEMRI notes, is paid by the Religious Affairs Ministry of the Palestinian Authority, as are his fellow Friday preachers.

The western media rarely reports on sermons such as this, as it would shatter the notion that the PA is truly interested in peace. Imagine the outcry if statements such as this were made about Palestinians by an Israeli sponsored Rabbi.

As Claudia notes, the Middle East Media Research Institute provides translations of speeches, articles and other items in the Arabic media. This is an excellent resource to determine what is being said in the Arabic media. Some of the articles are disturbing while others show that a voice of moderation does exist in the Middle East.
